Cwmbran is known for many things. Its free parking. Its shopping centre. It’s even known for having the first McDonalds in South Wales! (I got that fact from Goldie Lookin Chain’s “Fresh Prince of Cwmbran“.)

But one thing that people may not know about Cwmbran, is the abundance of sporting talent that has come from our small town. So here’s 16 sports stars from Cwmbran.


1.) Danny Gabbidon

Danny Gabbidon is a professional football player who has played for the likes of Cardiff City, West Ham and Crystal Palace. He has also made 49 appearances playing for the Welsh national team in the span of his career.


2.) Jamie Arthur


Jamie Arthur is a professional boxer who won the gold medal in the men’s lightweight division at the Commonwealth games in 2002. He also managed to win the Welsh super featherweight title in 2008, and the Commonwealth Super-bantamweight title in 2008.


3.) Ceri Dallimore


Ceri Dallimore is a marks-woman who won the gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games.


4.) Ian Gough

Ian Gough is an ex-professional rugby player who has enjoyed a successful career playing for clubs such as the Newport Gwent Dragons and the Swansea Ospreys. He also gained 64 caps playing for the Welsh national rugby team.


5.) Gary Lockett


Gary Lockett is a former professional boxer who at one point contended for the middleweight world title. These days, he works as a boxing trainer.


6.) Andy Dibble


Andy Dibble is a former professional goalkeeper who  played for a range of football clubs including Manchester City, Rangers and Cardiff City. He’s now a goalkeeping coach at Rotherham United.


7.) Kyron Duke

Kyron Duke is a professional athlete who has represented Wales in both powerlifting and Paralympian track and field events. He represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games of 2010 in powerlifting, and qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in both the javelin and shot put.


8.) Chris Hallam


The late Chris Hallam was a wheelchair athlete who represented his country in four separate Paralympic events.


9.) Stuart Harrison


Stuart Charles Harrison is a former professional cricketer who played for Glamorgan in the 1970s.


10.) Ernie Jenkins


Ernie Jenkins was a professional rugby player who played for Newport and Wales.


11.) Jak Jones

Jak Jones is an ex-professional snooker player who won the European Under 19s Snooker Championship in 2010.


12.) Fred Parfitt


Fred Parfitt was a multi-talented sportsman who represented Wales in both Bowls and Rugby Union.


13.) Dan Thomas


Dan Thomas is a professional rugby union player who plays as flanker for Gloucester Rugby Club.


14.) Helen Weston


Helen Weston is a professional netball player who is currently the only player from her sport to be inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.


15.) Lenny Woodard


Lenny Woodard is a former professional rugby player who played for the Welsh national team and a host of domestic clubs including Croesyceiliog RFC and Pontypool RFC.


16.) Theo Warton

Theo Warton is a professional football player who plays as a midfielder for Cardiff City Football Club.
